What is in Our Water and

How Did it Get There?

Who we are:

Faculty Mentor:

Richard Yuretich

Graduate Fellows:

Kate Berti and Mary Johnson

Teacher:

Cathie Morsch, 7th Grade, Duggan Middle School, Springfield, MA

We will use the hydrologic cycle as the basis for studying water at the Earth’s surface: where it comes from, how the amounts change on a seasonal basis, the natural processes that change the chemical composition of water, and practices that introduce pollution into the water.

Our Original Mission:

    1. Monitor seasonal rainfall patterns
    2. Monitor stream flow

Revised Mission:

Study the effects of pond dredging on water quality and surrounding biota at Breckwood Pond, Springfield, MA

Moving Forward:

Goals:

    1. Investigate water quality testing in classrooms to gather monthly pond data
    2. Observe and report pond environment interactions of flora, fauna, water, humans, weather at Breckwood
    3. Produce a pre-dredging report to present to the City of Springfield as part of a collaborative study with the City to determine local impact of dredging Breckwood
