Report on the 58th reunion

Location:          UMass Amherst Campus Center Hotel

Dates:               Tuesday-Thursday June 3-5, 2008

Why a 58th  reunion? Why not? The 55th  reunion in Sarasota was a big hit with the 80 alumni and guests who attended. The consensus was that at our age we should not wait five years for another.
Why Amherst?

It is conveniently located just 3 hours from New York and in the center of the scenic and historic Connecticut River valley. You can explore trendy downtown Northampton or Amherst, visit art galleries and greenhouses at the Five Colleges (UMass, Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire), or take the optional trips we have arranged to Historic Deerfield Village or the National Yiddish Book Center (see below).

Dates

Tuesday-Thursday June 3-5, 2008. Come early or stay on afterwards if you wish at the same weekday hotel rate. We chose midweek because there is less  traffic and the hotel rooms are less expensive.

University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus Center Hotel.

Historic Deerfield Village trip

Wed., 9:30

Optional 2 hour visit to Historic Deerfield Village, a few miles from Amherst; you can drive or ride on our rented bus. "Situated on a 330-year-old, mile long street, Historic Deerfield preserves and interprets the architecture, artifacts and lifestyle of a prosperous early New England town. The extraordinary houses with their antique furnishings, along with the exhibition galleries and collections, comprise some of the finest examples of publicly available Americana in the United States." (Cost: $15)
National Yiddish Book Center trip

Wed. 1:30

Optional 2 hour visit to the National Yiddish Book Center, located on the campus of Hampshire College in Amherst; you can drive or take our rented bus. “The National Yiddish Book Center was founded in 1980 by MacArthur Fellow Aaron Lansky when he was a 23-year-old graduate student, Lansky stumbled upon an alarming fact: thousands of priceless Yiddish books – books that had survived Hitler and Stalin – were being discarded and destroyed as an older generation passed on, An entire literature was on the verge of extinction… Soon, Lansky and a handful of co-workers were spending weeks and months on the road, hauling priceless Jewish books from cellars and attics, synagogues and abandoned buildings. When the Center began, scholars estimated there were 70,000 Yiddish books still extant and recoverable. The Center recovered that number in six months and has gone on to recover 1.5 million volumes ,,,

"As the world’s only comprehensive supplier of Yiddish books, we’ve drawn on our extensive duplicate holdings to establish or strengthen Yiddish collections at more than 450 of the world’s great libraries ...Because many of our books are physically deteriorating – and because we no longer have sufficient supplies to meet demand – in 1998 we launched the Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library: a pioneering program to digitize the titles in our collection and make high-quality reprints available on demand," (Cost $10)
