Language Through Cultural Arts

Problem Statement:

When helping English Language Learning students improve their English communication skills, a key focus must be on vocabulary. Image to word association is a common practice when building a child's language. By using culturally relevant artwork students can make personal connections to their growing vocabulary list.

Motivation:

Language is a fundamental key to one's cultural identity. Once a student is moved to an area where they must acquire a new language, that identity can be called into question. By using artwork from the student's cultural background a deeper connection to the meaning can be established. Once the student conceptually understands the new language they can succeed in the classroom.

Approach:

Using the power point presentation I will present a series or pictures. Students will have to explain what they see. Next, I will show the word that corresponds with a picture, then the students will have a chance to read the word on their own. After the students attempt to read the word, they will be talk about the word's meaning as it relates to the image.

At the end the students will be given a list of the covered words. The will be to demonstrate their understanding of the word's meanings by drawing their own pictures.

Results:

As a result of this implementation, the students will be able to increase their daily vocabulary. With this expansion they should be able to communicate more effectively.

This project will be also give me the opportunity to incorporated mores their different learning styles (visual, audio, creativity, etc,)

Conclusion:

The implementation of this project within the classroom will not only benefit the students language skills but also give them an exposure to fine art. This will help the student become more well rounded individuals. Finally the artistic imagery will help in the development the critical thinking skills.
