Contemporary Issues of Polar Change Jigsaw: Online Readings

Jigsaw is a cooperative learning technique used to break up a large amount of reading material or information in a divide and conquer manner.

Peer/Expert Groups

  1. Today, you will meet briefly in groups of five or six to divide up some material to read and research. This material relates to presentations by Julie Brigham Grette and Ray Bradley.  Each member of the group will select one of the topics to read about. Your homework tonight and tomorrow is to skim/read up on that topic and consider its implications. You will become an  "expert" on this particular aspect of the topic.

Many of these files are in PDF format (Adobe Reader needed on your computer) Please do not printout all the articles as this should be an online assignment!  Read/browse through what you can and try not to stress out too much on this!

*Groups of six can assign two people to one topic

  1. On Friday morning, you will join with other  experts  to discuss the topic in great detail, making sure that everyone in the group understands the topic well enough to be able to go back to your original group and  "teach"(or at least provide them with some information) it to them.
  1. Later on Friday morning, you will regroup into your original peer group and share what you have learned and discuss possible ways of integrating the topics into your curriculum.
  1. Final Group Discussion  - the whole class will reconvene to process the implications of the material.  By then, you should all be experts in all areas!  (Jigsaw puzzle completed)

Expert Groups

Julie and Ray have suggested the following web resources and pdfs for reading material related to polar issues.  They are now located on our website at https://www.umassk12.net/ipy/2008summer/IPYjigsaw.html The link is also at the bottom of our materials page.
